Police barred from giving statements to media

Mysuru: A decision to ban Police officers from making unauthorised public statements and to maintain secrecy of work has been issued by the City Police Commissioner K.T. Balakrishna under the instructions from the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Bengaluru.

The decision stipulates that members of the Police force, whether uniformed or civil, are not allowed to give statements to the media on any issue without obtaining prior permission. They have been barred from giving any information related to crimes to any media outlet until obtaining a special permission from the higher officers.

The officers authorised to give statements to media are City Police Commissioner at City level, Superintendent of Police at District level and Inspector General of Police at Division level.

Balakrishna has warned of disciplinary action including suspension against such officers who give statements to media without authorisation.

Those officers who want to give media statements must obtain prior permission from the Police Commissioner through the CCRB Inspector who has been named as the Public Relations Officer, Balakrishna stated.
