Free counselling offered in 37,380 cases till date
Mysuru: The ‘Police Helpline’ in city completed successful 20 years with the office-bearers and volunteers of Police Department getting together to celebrate the occasion, here yesterday.
Members and volunteers of the Helpline held a celebration at the Police Commissioner’s office by cutting the cake. Speaking on the occasion, City Police Commissioner K.T. Balakrishna appreciated the services offered by the Police Helpline in saving many lives through counselling.
Police Helpline was started in the month of July, 2000 by the then Police Commissioner C. Chandrashekar after coming across a case of a minor girl committing suicide during which he thought the girl could have been saved if there had been a counselling facility.
It so far has taken up cases of dowry harassment, sexual harassment, marital discord, depression, drug addiction, suicidal tendencies, poverty, mental illness, financial instability, family disputes, disputes with neighbours and other cases in the past 20 years. The Police Helpline, which is currently functioning from Lashkar Police Station building, is headed by the City Police Commissioner as its Hon. President. The other office-bearers include: Paediatrician and Usha Kiran Foundation Founder Dr. Mothi (Vice-President), Gp. Capt (retd.) Ajay Dudeja (Secretary) and Bank of India Regional Managar (retd.) M.R. Dwarkanath (Treasurer). There also 32 volunteers from different walks of life including doctors, advocates, retired teachers, home-makers, army personnel and others who have been working for the Helpline.
DCP M. Muthuraj, Devaraja ACP Gajendra Prasad and other Police officers were present during yesterday’s event.
