Gulbarga University VC felicitated
Mysuru: University of Mysore Alumni Association (UMAA) and Dr. S.R. Niranjana Felicitation Committee, Manasagangothri, had organised a function at Rani Bahadur auditorium in Manasagangothri here yesterday to felicitate Gulbarga University Vice-Chancellor Dr. S.R. Niranjana, who has been selected as Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc) for his immense contribution to research in the field of Biology.
Speaking after felicitating Dr. Niranjana, Higher Education and District in-Charge Minister G.T. Devegowda opined that education sector would suffer if University lecturers were appointed through political lobbying and emphasised that merit should be the sole criterion for appointment.
He said that any research in science should benefit the last strata of society.
He further said that he had held a meeting twice with the Vice-Chancellors of Universities and had suggested that each University should adopt five villages to improve the educational level of rural people.
Continuing, Devegowda contended that lecturers need thorough training to teach the students, as many students are more conversant and knowledgeable with modern technology than their lecturers.
He said that a few Vice-Chancellors earn respect and honour whether in service or even on retirement and commended Dr. Niranjana as one such person.
Mysore Varsity Vice-Chancellor Dr. G. Hemantha Kumar, Registrar Prof. R. Rajanna, former VC Prof. K.S. Rangappa, former VC of Bangalore University Dr. H.A. Ranganath, Felicitation Committee Chairman Dr. Vasanth Kumar Thimakapur, Secretary Prof. N.K. Lokanath and others were present during the felicitation ceremony.
