Poor response for Highway bandh

Mysuru, Chamarajanagar/Ramanagaram: The day-long State-wide highway blockade called by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene (Kodihalli Chandrashekhar faction) evoked poor response in Mysuru district this morning.

Protesting against the State government’s move to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, the farmers’ organisations in Mysuru gave a call to block traffic on Bengaluru-Mysuru Road near Ramanagaram and on the inter-state highway through Chamarajanagar and on Hunsur-Mysuru Highway.

Though a few farmers blocked Chamarajanagar Highway, they did not block Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway and Hunsur-Mysuru Road. Sporadic protests were held in Ramanagaram for some time. Members of Chamarajanagar District unit of KRRS and Hasiru Sene held protest by blocking the National Highway 209 between Yelandur and Kollegal.

Traffic was thrown out of gear for half-an-hour as hundreds of farmers blocked the highway connecting Chamarajanagar with Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The protesters shouted slogans against the State Government condemning its proposed amendments that will facilitate acquisition of farm land for various development projects without farmers’ consent.
