The news item in SOM dated Dec. 17 about the “Drone survey of Poornaiah Canal” likely brought joy to every Mysurean, with only a few exceptions.
For years, environmental activists have fervently advocated for the preservation of Kukkarahalli Lake and the Dewan Poornaiah Canal that brings water to the Kukkarahalli Lake from far-flung areas. Finally, there is a glimmer of hope that their aspirations might be realised, all thanks to the proactive efforts of our Deputy Commissioner, Dr. K.V. Rajendra.
Upon his transfer from Mangaluru to Mysuru, Dr. Rajendra promptly demonstrated a keen interest in safeguarding Kukkarahalli Lake and initiating the removal of encroachments along the 22-kilometre stretch of the Poornaiah Canal. His articulated strategy for the systematic removal of encroachments, while adhering to the rule of law, signals his readiness to confront any obstacles posed by vested interests.
Given recent history, any official undertaking such bold measures to expose corruption might face the likelihood of a transfer. The question arises: Will history repeat itself in this case?
The power lies with the people. If we unite and resist any such transfer, we can shape history. In a democracy, it’s crucial to remember that we are the masters who can compel the political system to act in the best interest of the city, rather than catering to a select few.
To achieve this, every Mysurean, every NGO, every trade association, and so forth, must actively participate in large numbers. Let us prepare ourselves before it becomes too late. Together, we can ensure a positive outcome for our city.
