Preserve city’s heritage buildings, says Swachh Survekshan Brand Ambassador Pramoda Devi Wadiyar

Mysuru: The heritage buildings like Devaraja Market and Lansdowne buildings in the city must be preserved at any cost. Otherwise the tag that Mysuru called the Heritage City will have no meaning, said Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, wife of late royal scion Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar.

She was addressing the issue, when a delegation from Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) led by Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath met her yesterday at the Mysore Palace to seek her cooperation for Mysuru regaining top spot as the Cleanest City in the country as part of Swachh Survekshan.

There are many buildings in the city which have the stamp of heritage and it needs to be preserved at any cost. The HH SNW Foundation with the help of an expert team is restoring Jaganmohan Palace, one of the oldest buildings in the city. If required the experts working on the museum could also be used to preserve the Devaraja Market and Lansdowne building, said Pramoda Devi, who is also the President of the Foundation.

Meanwhile, Pramoda Devi, who is one of the Brand Ambassadors of ‘Swachh Survekshan’  said that she was very happy to be associated with the MCC for promoting Mysuru has a   Clean City.

She gave a call to the people of the city to cooperate and see that the city regains the top spot again as the Cleanest City in the country this year by downloading Swachhatha app and providing information to gain valuable points.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, here this morning, Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath said that she and her team will see that the heritage structures in the city are preserved as suggested by Pramoda Devi.

However, as far as Devaraja Market and Lansdowne buildings are concerned, the Technical Committee and the Heritage Committee had given conflicting reports and hence, the matter would be placed before the Council again and a decision taken. After the decision is taken it will be communicated to her, she added.

Deputy Mayor Shafi Ahmed, MCC Commissioner K.H. Jagadeesha, Health Officer Dr. Nagaraj, Health Committee Chairman Ramani Ramesh and others were present at the Palace meeting.

MCC Works Panel inspects heritage structures

Later, the Mysuru City Corporation Works Standing Committee headed by Chairperson Lakshmi Shivanna visited both the Devaraja Market and Lansdowne buildings along with the officials and inspected them.

The Committee will also submit a report regarding the status of the buildings which will be placed before the Council and a decision taken whether to preserve the buildings or demolish them and reconstruct.
