Mysore/Mysuru: Prof. Mewa Singh of the University of Mysore has been selected for one of the most prestigious academic assignments of the country — the Prime Minister Professorship awarded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) of the Government of India. He is the only professor selected under this scheme from Karnataka.
As per the ANRF website, the main objective of the Prime Minister Professorship is “leveraging expertise of active, eminent and superannuated scientists for their outstanding contributions both nationally and internationally in the areas of engineering, science and technology, including agriculture, medicine and social sciences at the interface of science and technology. The programme aims to strengthen R&D culture in less endowed institutions especially, State Universities, by boosting their research and innovation aspects.”
The Prime Minister Professorship will provide a Fellowship of Rs. 2,50,000 per month, along with a research grant of Rs. 24,00,000 per annum and an overhead of Rs. 1,00,000 per annum, for a duration of five years.
The Prime Minister Professor is expected to mentor faculty and students to improve/raise their research ecosystem to world-class standards.
Prof. Mewa Singh is internationally recognised for his contributions in the area of ecology, animal behaviour and wildlife conservation.
He has received many international and national awards, including ‘Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Primatological Society’, ‘Fellowship of the Associations for Tropical Biology and Conservation’, Fellowships of the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences.
He was also awarded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Ramanna Fellowship, J.C. Bose National Fellowship, and the SERB Distinguished Fellowship.
Currently, he is working as the Indian National Science Academy Distinguished Professor at the University of Mysore. He is also a Visiting Professor at several Universities and research institutions.
