I was born and brought up in this beautiful city and was a resident of Yadavagiri. I am now a regular visitor.
Over the last 3 decades, it is apparent that traffic in Mysuru has compounded. I appreciate the many changes the local Government has made to the city. That said, there is always room for growth.
I would like to bring to the attention of the concerned some much-needed improvements to the Akashavani Circle, with the safety of people in view.
Firstly, as difficult as it may be to synchronise traffic moving through an intersection where six roads meet (seven including the one going into the Railway compound), traffic lights at all times are a must. There are school children, college students, vegetable vendors, senior citizens and tourists crossing the streets at various times of the day, all of them completely at the mercy of the chaotic traffic.
I am sure the traffic authority will find this a great challenge, but it will definitely be a great achievement for them if they could successfully install working traffic lights day and night !
Secondly, the name ‘Ta Ra Su Vrutta’ definitely must be retained. Indeed we need to honour our literary personalities, but the archaic physical structure “the Circle” needs to go. The roads must be marked by clear lanes. This will allow for free traffic flow once the traffic lights start to work. The light poles can be moved to the corners to light up the intersection and sidewalks.
Lastly, the footpath on the right hand side leading to the Circle from Yadavagiri (Vivekananda Road) is blocked by the Railway Colony compound wall (see picture, marked in red). This is a life-threatening blind spot for vehicles coming in from KRS Road as well as to pedestrians walking to cross the road to go to Cheluvamba Park.
People, especially senior citizens, find it very difficult to cross the street. If this wall could be pushed back about 25 feet, it would open up the road and footpath (marked in green) for safe passage.
The above mentioned changes come from genuine concern and are much needed for the safety of the residents. Let’s keep Mysuru beautiful, liveable and safe. I sincerely hope the authorities concerned will be able to do this without any political agenda.
