Mysore/Mysuru: “Guru-Shishya Parampare is still prevalent in the field of music. There is no better field than music for communal harmony. Many Hindu-Muslim musicians have set a tradition of communal harmony through Guru-Shishya Parampare,” opined Dr. Jayadevi Jangamashetti, Assistant Professor, Music and Fine Arts Department, Central University of Karnataka, Kalaburagi. She was speaking at a musical event and Pt. K.S. Hadapada Award-2023 presentation function organised by Sri Guru Puttaraja (SGP) Sangeetha Sabha, Mysuru, in memory of late Pandit K.S. Hadapada at Ganabharathi, Kuvempunagar in the city, on Sunday.
She also demanded that any one of the Universities of the State be named after Ganayogi Guru Panchakshara Gawai and Ganayogi Guru Puttaraja Gawai to immortalise the names of two great musicians of Karnataka.
Presenting Pt. K.S. Hadapada Award for the year 2023 to renowned tabla artiste Pt. Satlingappa Desai Kallur, she said that it is good that Pt. Kallur is getting this award. “Late Pt. Hadapada had practiced music at Sri Veereshwara Punyasharama. It is a matter of pride for Hindustani music that a legend like Pt. Hadapada practiced music at Punyashrama. Many people have learnt music at Puttaraja Gawai School of Music and become famous,” she added.
Observing that many people from Kalyana Karnataka are in the field of Hindustani music, she said that Sri Guru Puttaraja Sangeetha Sabha President Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur has opened a small music school in Mysuru region giving priority to Hindustani music and is producing a good number of musicians to carry forward the legacy of Hindustani music which is commendable. “Though Pt. Hadapada composed many new Raagas, he never boasted his achievements. But present Professors, despite getting instructions from University Grants Commission (UGC) to compose new Raagas are not showing interest,” regretted Dr. Jayadevi.
Prior to this, students of SGP Music School Treesha, B. Poorvi, R. Shaswath, R. Dhyan, Mohith, J. Kishore, Akshobya A. Bharadwaj, Aniruddha Katti, M. Sanjay, Manhar Murthy, M.P. Vishruth, H.S. Aryadatta, Dhimantha Bharadwaj participated in a mass tabla playing programme.
Following the stage programme, there was a vocal concert by Vijayalakshmi Pujera (Kalaburagi), accompanied by Pt. Bhimashankar Bidanur on tabla, Mrutyunjaya Hiremath on harmonium. The evening also featured Tabla Solo by the awardee and Tabla Jugalbandi by Pt. Satlingappa Desai Kallur, Malemallesh Hugar and Raghunandanana Gopal Hugar, accompanied by Bhagyashree Hugar on lehra.
Ganabharathi Treasurer C.S. Janardhan, GSSS Principal S.R. Hemalatha and others were present at the programme.
