In memory of Rajya Sangeetha Vidwan S. Mahadevappa
Mysore/Mysuru: In memory of renowned guru, violinist, Rajya Sangeetha Vidwan S. Mahadevappa a concert is being conducted by his family and disciples on Jan. 1 at 6 pm at Navajyothi Auditorium, JSS Women’s College in city.
The concert is to pay tribute to his yeomen contribution to the felid of Karnatak music. This year marks the 5th anniversary of such concerts titled “Danyasi,” a favoruite raga of Mahadevappa.
Renowned maestro Pt. Ronu Majumdar will present a flute recital accompanied on tabla by Pt. Ravindra Yavagal.
Profile: Vid. S. Mahadevappa was born in a small village called Mudigundam near Mysore. Initiated into classical music at an early age, he had his formal training in vocal music and violin under the tutelage of Narayanaswamy of Kollegal.
Later he was accepted as a student by one of the great musicians of Karnataka, T. Puttaswamiah, younger brother of legendary vilolinist T. Chowdiah. He had a rigorous training in a traditional Gurukula system. It was here where Mahadevappa was introduced to the great musical ideas of chaste classical music and began perfecting all sections of the great divine art.
Mahadevappa’s artistry is the quintessence of the pristine purity of the respected Bidaram school of Sri Thyagarajaswamy Paramapara in which he is the torch bearer. It did not take long for Mahadevappa to establish as a leading violinist. He had the opportunity to widen his musical ideas by accompanying some of the greatest musicians of yesteryears.
One of the most successful violinists and teachers, Mahadevappa was offered the post of the Head of the Department of Violin at University of Mysore where he served as a Professor for almost 26 years.
Consolidating the enormous achievements of his prede-cessors and different new approach of contemporary Violinists, Mahadevappa designed a totally new and complete violin techniques creating an ideal style to express the great versatility of violin with strict adherence to classicism.
He imparted rigorous training to his children — Violinists Mysore Nagaraj and Dr. Mysore Manjunath (Mysore Brothers) in this style.
Pt. Ronu Majumdar: Disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravishankar, Ronu Majumdar is an artiste of national and international repute. Belonging to the Maihar Gharana, he is considered as one of the leading Flautists of our nation and has received a Grammy nomination for his work on the album Tabula Rasa.
Ronu Majumdar has received Sangeet Natak Academy Award 2014 and Lifetime Achievement Award by Navbharat Times. He has represented India on international musical platforms on many occasions
Pt. Ravindra Yavagal: A veteran tabla artiste, Ravindra’s presence spans across national and international concert circuits. His tabla art has a distinct gayaki (vocal) aspect, with percussive expressions that bend and stretch like the human voice.
