Mysuru: Former Minister S.A. Ramdas visited various waste segregation units in city yesterday and threatened to file a complaint with Central Environment Board and Human Rights Commission on failing to restart the units.
Ramdas, who had staged a hunger strike for three-day from Dec.14, had withdrawn following the assurance from DC D. Randeep to restart the nine Zero Waste Management units in city.
He first visited the Zero Waste Management unit located at the burial ground on Jodi Thenginamara Road in Bannimantap and expressed his displeasure over the authorities for not taking measures to restart the unit.
“We have been working hard to ensure Mysuru emerges as the cleanest city in the country. But, with waste segregation not being taken up scientifically, it would be difficult for us to achieve our target. Though it was promised to restart all Zero Waste Management units by Dec.31, four units still remain unused,” said Ramdas. Among the nine Zero Waste Management units, only the one in Kumbarakoppal functioned and the remaining eight units remained defunct. Later, based on DC Randeep’s instructions, the authorities started units located under MCC Zonal Offices 6,7,8 and 9. But the remaining are yet to start functioning.
There is a dearth of workers in the Zero Waste Management units in city but the funds are being drawn creating fake documents on the number of workers, said Ramdas.
Alleging that the MCC is misusing the Central funds, he said that the City Corporation has been getting Rs.32 crore for scientific segregation of wastes for all nine units and Rs.1.50 per kg for manufacturing compost.
Ramdas also mentioned that the animal waste was being dumped unscientifically at that unit which caused problems for residents. He also threatened to launch a fresh protest in case of failing to restart the units.
