Rare Ornate Flying Snake spotted at a house on Ramanuja Road

Mysore/Mysuru: A rare snake found in the Western Ghats, Bihar, Odisha, WB, UP, Northeast India and South East Asia, that made its appearance on the grill of the door of a house on Ramanuja Road yesterday, disappeared before the snake rescuer could rescue it.

The rare snake that appeared on Thursday at the house of S. Venkataramu is the Ornate Flying Snake. On seeing the snake, the family members called rescuer Snake Shivu and by the time he arrived the snake had moved away.

Shivu, speaking to ‘SOM’ said that Ornate Flying Snake is found in the Western Ghats and suspected that any goods vehicles that were stranded for many days in Western Ghats region due to lockdown may have carried the snake accidentally to city after permission was given to them to operate. He said that though he could see the snake he was unable to reach the spot and the snake escaped.

An Ornate Flying Snake (Chrysopelea ornata) is capable of gliding in air by flattening their body, at times, almost twice their normal width. They appear to exhibit this behaviour to avoid predators.
