Re-form Tree Authority: MGP urges Conservator of Forests

Mysuru: Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has submitted a memorandum urging Conservator of Forests, Mysuru Circle, Dr. Malathi Priya to reconstitute a Tree Authority of Mysuru by nominating new members, which is pending since 2009.

The MGP delegation led by its Working President Shobana Sambashiva was of the view that, the absence of such a Tree Authority, gave carte blanche to the recent incident of 40-tree felling on Hyder Ali road in the city, with the Forest Department acting at its whim and fancy in granting permission to  the proposal for tree felling on the road side. This was in addition to several trees cut down on the same stretch of road in the past.

In Dattagalli too, hundreds of trees are being axed to install additional electric poles. Had the Tree Authority been constituted, such incidents of massive tree felling wouldn’t have occurred, he added.

The MGP office- bearers apprised Dr. Malathi Priya about making an appeal to the Superintending Engineer of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) of taking steps to curtail such activities and also resort to scientific methods.

MGP Convener D.V. Dayanand Sagar told Star of Mysore about the plan to meet Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Commissioner with a requisition to take reforms to conserve the trees.

MGP Treasurer Shankar, environmentalists Bhanu Mohan and Praneeta were present.
