Reckless driving major cause of deaths on Expressway

Urgent action needed by Government in consultation with NHAI

The news of 55 lives lost in 570 accidents over a five-month period on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway is deeply unsettling and raises significant concerns (55 killed in five months in accidents on Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway, SOM dated June 9).

According to the report, 52 individuals suffered serious injuries, while 184 experienced fractures and 279 sustained minor injuries. The report also attributes these fatal accidents to unscientific construction, incorrect alignment at certain stretches of the Expressway and negligent driving, which has been a major contributing factor.

Regarding the claims of ‘unscientific construction’ and ‘incorrect alignment,’ I find it hard to reconcile with my own experience of travelling on the Expressway. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been responsible for constructing numerous highways across the country, ensuring alignment and scientific construction that adhere to various geometric requirements.

However, the more pressing issue lies in the prevalence of reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, which are significant causes of accidents. The preservation of precious lives must be our utmost priority and no effort should be spared in achieving this goal.

Despite the speed limit being set at 100 km/hour, drivers often exceed it, reaching speeds of 120-140 km/hour, which essentially amounts to courting disaster.

To address this issue, it is imperative to employ a combination of speed-calming measures. Installing overspeed detection mechanisms at suitable locations, establishing frequent Traffic Police check-posts to apprehend errant drivers, displaying effective signage with impactful messages and implementing rumble strips to warn against over-speeding are just a few potential strategies.

I sincerely hope that the Government, in consultation with NHAI authorities, will take swift and appropriate action to rectify this situation. It is vital that we prioritise the safety of all those who utilise the Expressway.
