The 84th refresher course in Experimental Physics will be held at St. Philomena’s College in city from Feb. 14 to Mar. 1.
The course is sponsored by the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, the Indian National Science Academy, Delhi, the National Academy of Sciences of India, Allahabad and the St. Philomena’s College in Mysuru. The course will be directed by Prof. R. Srinivasan, FASc.
The course will be inaugurated by Prof. P. Venkataramaiah, former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, at a function at 10 am on Feb. 14 in St. Philomena’s College.
The function will be presided over by Principal of the College, Prof. M. Krishnegowda. Rev. Fr. Leslie Moras, Rector of the College, will be the guest of honour.
There will be 32 participants, mostly teachers, from Colleges in Karnataka and neighbouring States. The course aims to improve the laboratory instruction in Physics at the B.Sc and M.Sc (Physics) levels.
The participants will gain hands on experience in doing about 25 experiments, many of them advanced, with a low cost kit designed for the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, by Prof. R. Srinivasan. The kit is manufactured by Ajay Sensors and Instruments in Bengaluru.
The experiments are easy to do, verify physical laws and give good results. Resource persons for the course are drawn from Goa University and Bengaluru.
Prof. D. Revanasiddaiah, Department of Physics (PG), St. Philomena’s College, is the local coordinator.
Refresher Courses in Experimental Physics have been held all over India from Kashmir to Kerala and Gujarat to Tripura and have been highly successful. More than 125 institutions including some IISERs, IITs, Central and State Universities and autonomous institutions have adopted the experiments in the curriculum. Many more such courses will be held in 2017 in different States of India.
