Revoke trade licences of shops selling banned plastic: Justice Adi

Mysore/Mysuru: Justice Subhash B. Adi, Chairman of National Green Tribunal (NGT) State Committee has instructed the officers to suspend the trade licence of those shops selling banned plastic materials.

Presiding over a meeting on the management and disposal of solid waste at Deputy Commissioner’s office hall here on Wednesday, Justice Adi told Officers, “The use of plastic is prohibited in Mysuru city and district limits. Action should be initiated not just against those stocking and selling plastic, but also against those using them.”

Health Officers should carry out inspection drives with the assistance of Police. It is inevitable to take action without showing mercy against those ignoring the law against selling and using plastic, despite creating awareness.

Besides, cleanliness should be maintained by scientifically handling the disposal of waste and its reuse, he added.

People should be made aware about segregation of dry and wet waste. The roadside vendors should also be made aware of maintaining cleanliness and officers should conduct periodic inspections to ensure hygiene, suggested Justice Adi.

Special impetus should be given towards maintaining cleanliness at Chamundi Hill, the most popular tourist spot, by shifting old shopkeepers to new shops. But why are the Gram Panchayat officers mum about the shops being run in violation of rules?” Justice Adi asked the officers.

Commissioner of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) Ashaad-Ur-Rahman Shariff said, “Waste produced at homes is being segregated as dry and wet and disposed off in a scientific manner. The waste collected is dumped at three spots and handled in recycling units.”

Hazardous chemicals should be separated from solid waste and disposed off separately.  Sites should not be released at those residential layouts that lack storm water drain, UGD, solid waste management and other basic infrastructural facilities. Planning officials should lay down these conditions and ensure implementation while sanctioning the plan. —Justice Subhash B. Adi, Chairman, NGT State Committee
