Mysore/Mysuru: A road accident victim, who was declared brain dead by the doctors, has given a new lease of live to an organ recipient after the relatives gave their consent for organ donation.
B.S. Rajamma (53) was brought to Apollo BGS Hospitals in city on July 2, after she sustained a serious head injury due to road accident and was kept on life support as she was in a critical state. She was declared brain dead due to brain stem failure on July 2 at 5.30 pm, as per Hospital protocol stipulated by Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, by a panel of doctors at the Hospital. She was in good health at the time of the incident and further tests confirmed her eligibility for organ donation.
After the doctors counselled her relatives, they gave their consent to donate her organs.
As per organ donation protocols, officials from SOTTO (State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation), formerly Jeeva Sarthakathe, initiated the process based on organ recipient waiting list. Through a cross-clamp procedure, Rajamma’s liver was harvested at 8.15 am. The cross-clamp and harvest procedures took place on the same day she was declared brain dead, thus giving a new lease of life to one recipient.
Apollo BGS Hospitals, a licensed centre for multi-organ transplants in Mysuru, has expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the family of the deceased for coming forward for this noble cause of organ donation.
