Road safety at stake

Sir,

In a heart-rending incident, very recently, a one-year-old baby girl slipped from her mother’s lap when the two-wheeler in which they were travelling was moving over a hump near Mandya and injured grievously. However, she could not sustain the head injuries and died while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.

This incident should become a revelation to all elders, who are allowing their children to stand between them or carrying on their laps, while riding the two-wheelers. It also raises the importance of wearing the helmet while on the ride.

In spite of increased penalties, many two-wheeler riders are not bothered to wear the helmet either on city roads or on highways and taking chances with life. By obeying road safety rules like wearing helmets, seat-belts, slowing down while negotiating the humps, not using mobiles while driving, etc., accidents and accident-related injuries or deaths can be avoided or minimised and it helps to save the lives of people.
