Bengaluru: In a major initiative, State Transport Department will be cracking a whip on two-wheeler riders with children as pillion, if they don’t adhere to safety rules. It is mandatory for the children below the age group of 4 years to wear safety harness, while riding pillion.
Any violation on the part of two-wheeler riders will be strictly dealt, by imposing a fine of Rs. 1,000 on the parents for not securing their kids with safety harness.
According to The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, of the Central Government, it is mandatory for children travelling on two-wheelers to be secured with safety harness. The Transport Department has created awareness at all the District Centres and Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in this regard.
Though the Act exists, it was not effectively implemented, forcing the filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) at the High Court. Following which, acting on the ordinance of the Centre, the Transport Department has issued instructions for executing the law effectively.
