BARC Visiting Faculty inaugurates seminar at St. Philos
Mysuru: A one-day State-level seminar on ‘Innovations and Challenges in Nuclear, Chemical and Bio-Chemical Sciences’ was organised by the Departments of Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry (UG) at St.Philomena’s College auditorium here recently.
The seminar aimed at educating and enriching the students, faculty and research scholars in exploring the potentialities, problems and prospects in the fields of Nuclear, Chemical and Bio-Chemical Sciences.
Dr. Gulshan Relhan, Visiting Faculty at BARC, Mumbai , who inaugurated the seminar, explained the importance of future challenges in the field of science especially in nuclear, chemical and bio-chemical fields.
Pointing out at the motto of the seminar, which is to encourage and throw light on future challenges in the field of science, he said that science is an evolutionary and a dynamic process, but not a stationary one. Dr.Gulshan, through his power point presentation, gave a bird’s eye view of innovations that took place in the current century namely discovery of God’s particle (HIGGS BOSON) using larger Hadron collider.
He also mentioned India’s contribution to the world of science by citing the example of MARS Orbiter Mission (MOM) which made India one of a few countries in the world to enter into MARS atmosphere.
He gave a brief account of future challenges in science like splitting of water at room temperature, which if made possible can reduce the energy crisis. He also threw light upon non-fossil fuel based options for production of power.
Earlier, Dr.Ruth Shantha Kumari, Principal of the college, delivered the introductory address.
Prof. Agnes Sylvia D’Souza, Associate Professor, welcomed. Dr. Ravi J.D.Saldanha, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, introduced the guests. Rev. Fr. Bernard P. Barnis, Rector of the college, presided. Lydia Vandana, HoD of Bio-Chemistry, proposed a vote of thanks.
Sessions for the rest of the day were conducted by Dr.Veena Prassad, senior scientist, CeNS, Bengaluru and Dr.Asha Srinivasan, Asst.Professor, Department Life Sciences, JSS Medical College, Mysuru.
At the valedictory session, Dr.Gulshan spoke on ‘Radioisotopes and its applications in Analytical Chemistry, Agriculture, Industries and Health-care.’
The Undergraduate students of Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry, faculty members and research scholars from both the host college and outside colleges attended.
