Seminar highlights importance of Sports Psychology

The Department of Physical Education (DPE), University of Mysore (UoM), in association with ‘We The Society’, had organised a seminar on the topic ‘Psychological Dimensions of Performance in Sports’ at Yoga Hall in the Sports Pavilion in city yesterday.

Speaking after inaugurating the seminar, UoM Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar highlighted the importance of Sports Psychology in Physical Education. “Sports Psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organisations,” he explained.

Prof. Hemantha Kumar opined that this specialised knowledge would protect the public by ensuring that those who seek services receive them from qualified individuals.

“The proficiency provides a recognised set of standards to guide appropriate training of psychologists who wish to practice Sport Psychology,” he said and also elucidated about some of the principal areas of Sports Psychology.

Retired Professor of Physical Education, UoM, Thirumalai Gopalan delivered the keynote address. Ekalavya Awardee, Sports Psychologist and International Swimmer Shubha Chittaranjan was the Resource Person for the seminar. UoM’s DPE Director Dr. P. Krishnaiah presided. Mentor Prof. G. Venkatesh Kumar was the chief guest during the occasion.
