Mysuru/Mysore: The Post-Graduate Department of Botany, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Ooty Road had organised UGC-sponsored State-level seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in Plant Science.’
Dr. Venkatesh Prasad, Head, Synthetic Biology Function, Reliance Industries Ltd., Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai, inaugurated the seminar.
Chief guest N.M. Shiva-shankarappa, Director, Horticulture Division, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, inaugurated JSS-BOTANICA Forum, a Botanical Club for students studying Botany in JSS Institution. He spoke about uses of common plants like Tulsi as mouth freshener and home-made green tea.
College Chief Executive Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah presided and emphasised on importance Plant Science. “It is no more a basic science. With the advancement of technologies like Biotechnology, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics and Genetics it has transformed into a multidisciplinary subject. It has solutions for deadly disease like Corona which is getting attention worldwide in recent days. Areas of plant science like cell membrane studies and gene splicing will lead to major discoveries in near future,” he added.
Principal Prof. M. Maha-devappa, Organising Secretary Dr. V. Beligiriranga , Convener Dr. S. Rashmi, Co-convener G.M. Sindhu and Organising member A.M. Meghashree, were present.
