Indian sprinter, Olympian M.R. Poovamma entered into wedlock with Jithin Paul, an athlete from Kerala, at a ceremony held at Adyar Garden in Mangaluru city’s outskirts yesterday. The marriage took place as per Kodava tradition. Poovamma’s father Machettira G. Thammaiah (Raju), mother Janaki (Jaji), Jithin’s mother Jancy, family members, friends, sports personalities and other dignitaries attended the marriage ceremony. Poovamma represented India twice in the Olympics and four times in the Asian Games. The wedding reception is planned at Chalakudy in Kerala on January 1. Poovamma, a native of Mangaluru, specialises in 400m running and is presently serving in ONGC Mangaluru.
