The recent revision of the power tariff has sparked a great uproar among power consumers. It is a well-known fact that the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) undertakes this exercise annually in May-June. However, due to the election Model Code of Conduct, the revision was delayed this time.
Interestingly, both the Congress and BJP are now blaming each other, absolving themselves of any responsibility.
While it is important to acknowledge the role of KERC in recommending tariff revisions, it is equally crucial to address certain concerns that the Government may have the power to decide upon. Unfortunately, in this particular instance, KERC has only recommended tariff revisions without considering the reduction or elimination of previously offered rebates.
Furthermore, there are concerns that the newly formed Congress Government’s introduction of freebies could result in the removal of the solar rebate of Rs. 50 per household. Additionally, the slab system for power consumption may be eliminated, and the revision may affect billing from the very first unit of consumption.
Moreover, there have been changes in the per KW fixed charges. It is imperative that the Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) step forward and provide a justification for this hike.
It should be clarified whether the purpose is to offset the cost of the free 200 units, as these actions might be perceived as strategies or gimmick employed by the ruling party to gain political advantage, rather than genuine efforts to address power-related issues.
