The four-day South Zone Inter-University Kho Kho Tournament for women 2017 conducted by the Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, got off to a rousing start at the University Sports Pavilion grounds here, this morning.
The tournament was inaugurated by MLA Vasu, Acting VC Prof. Dayanand Mane, Arjuna Awardee Shobha Narayan, University of Mysore D. Bharathi by releasing the balloons.
Former Mysore University women’s kho-kho players who had won medals during 1995-96 & 2003-04 Inter- University championships – K.N. Anuradha, D.K. Kanthamma, N. Chandramma, Lathamani, K.R. Shashikala, M. Latha, K.S. Sukrutha, S. Nandushree, N. Nagamani, M. Mamatha Rani, K.M. Sunitha, Sowmya, K.J. Swetha and R. Bhavyashree were felicitated by the orgainsers. The organisers also felicitated Prof. Seshanna on the occasion.
It was also announced that MLA Vasu would be donating funds from his MLA fund laying of synthetic kho-Kho surface.
Around 60 University teams from South Zone are taking part in the tournament which will be held on a knock-out-cum-league basis. The matches will be played at the Sports Pavilion premises.
University of Calicut, the defending champions, Anna University, Chennai (runner-up), University of Mysore (second runner-up) and University of Kerala (4th place) during 2016-17, have been directly seeded into the quarter-finals.
The top players who will be seen in action for Mysore University are K.S. Megha (Represented Rest of India), M. Manjula, K.S. Prapulla and C. Lathashree (all represented State in Nationals). Calicut University’s top players who are taking part are Nijisha, Varsha, Rimey Poulson and Gladis Devassy.
The inaugural day will see action in the first round matches with 36 matches slated for the day in five courts.
