Mysuru: The final year students of NIE Institute of Technology (NIE-IT), Koorgalli, have won First Place in recently concluded State-level Engineering Project Exhibition and Competition ‘SRISHTI-2018’ organised by ABVP-Karnataka, in association with Dayananad Sagar College of Engineering.
Their project titled “IOT based monitoring of Reactive Power Flow at 220/66kV receiving station and controlling the operation of capacitor banks in 66/11kV substations” was selected for first place amongst 500 short listed projects across Karnataka.
The students — Mohd. Sanaulla Khan, N.L. Madan Kumar, M. Kiran and A.V. Akhilesh Kumar — have carried out the project under the external guidance of Er. R. Atheebullah Khan and Er. Rangaraju of TL & SS division of KPTCL, Mysuru.
Also, the project was internally guided by Prof. T. Ananthapadmanabha, Principal, NIE-IT and M. Malathi, Assistant Professor, NIE-IT, Mysuru.
First in Paper Presentation
The project titled ‘Diagnosis of visible diseases using Artificial Intelligence’ was implemented by the final semester students K.P. Vishal, M.S. Shamanth, K. Vikram and A. Chakradhar Reddy under the guidance of R. Sandeep, Associate Professor and K. Chethan, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE).
The project has won first prize in the paper presentation contest, Srishti-2018 and third prize in the Avishkar contest (Projects serving the society).
These State-level contests were held at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering.
The students and guides are thankful to Dr. D.J. Ravi, Professor and Head, ECE, Dr. B. Sadashive Gowda, Principal, for providing the positive ambience and support for the successful implementation of the project.
Abstract of the project
Humans are always susceptible to various diseases. People in urban areas and upper class can afford to approach the doctors and get their disease treated. But this is out of reach of people living in rural and downtrodden areas.
As per the National Rural Health Mission Report, in India 700 million people are living in more than 6,36,000 villages. 8% of the PHCs do not have doctors and 31% of population has to travel more than 30 kilometres to seek health care. Majority of people die due to preventable and curable diseases without getting medical attention.
Hence, a software has been developed using which all can get the necessary medical attention at the privacy of their homes. People in rural areas are accustomed to domestic cures such as faith healers for their ailments. They only visit doctors as a last option after having tried everything they have been advised by relatives and neighbours. Sometimes this leads to worsening of their condition and doctors prescribing surgery or expensive medicine. Using this application people can get the necessary medical information regarding their diseases and get the treatment at an earlier stage.
In this project a software is designed to diagnose the skin lesions accurately up to 99% with training efficiency of 78%. A novel convolution neural network based solution is implemented to train the network which is based on the state-of-the-art technology TensorFlow.
The network is trained using two algorithms (MobileNet and Inception_v3) separately. Currently a software that runs on computer has been developed which can detect the following diseases: Acne, Chickenpox, Herpes, Lupus, Melanoma, Ringworm, Psoriasis and Vitiligo.
The students are now working on a mobile application which can instantly diagnose the disease in real time. The application will be of 12-15 MB which will be released on Google Playstore free of cost.
