State-wide APMC bandh tomorrow

Mysuru: Transactions at Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard in city will be affected tomorrow as APMC bandh will be observed heeding to the call given by Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) for a State-wide APMC bandh.

The bandh is in the context of a Government order to remit payments to farmers directly to their Bank accounts electronically for agricultural produce purchased from them. The call for bandh of APMC in city is given by District Grain Merchants Association.

The State Government laun-ched the e-payment scheme on a trial basis at five APMCs in Bidar district, one each in Davanagere and Dharwar districts. Opposing that, merchants in those APMCs are on an indefinite strike from Aug. 5.

However, the Government contends that the e-payment would benefit farmers and prevent default by traders.

However, the Grain Merchants Association says that during peak season, transactions would go on till 1 am or 2 am and it would be impossible to pay farmers electronically.

Association General Secretary Anand contends that e-payment system has certain technical problems and hence seeks 48 hours time to remit payment to farmers.

KRRS General Secretary Badagalapura Nagendra opines that though e-payment is claimed as farmer-friendly it has its own drawbacks.
