Sir,
This refers to the various letters and factual reports on ‘stray dog menace’ that appeared in Star of Mysore recently. I would like to add that in Ramakrishnanagar-I Block also this menace is increasing. Some times there are so many, clustered together, like there is a ‘Summit Meeting of dogs’.
On a serious note, it is not just the stray dogs, even the pet dogs are left free on roads when their owners take them for a walk. When these huge dogs come near other people walking, it is very scary.
When we ask them, the dog owners just tell us that it won’t bite. Some are so indifferent and arrogant that they don’t even bother answering. Many times I have seen dogs chasing the two-wheeler riders.
People who have dogs as pets should also have some discipline and knowledge of how to raise them. In some of the foreign countries I have visited, there are no stray dogs and pet dogs are ‘ALWAYS’ on leash when they are brought out. There are parks where boards are kept saying ‘Dogs on leash only’ or ‘Dogs free’.
It is high time some regulations are made in this regard for the welfare of dogs and also of pedestrians.
