Talk on ‘Kannada Linguistic State’

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysore Open Forum has organised a talk on ‘Kannada Linguistic State and Linguistic Hegemony’ by Prof. Shakira Jabeen, Retired Professor of English, on Nov. 18 at 10.30 am at Kalpa Kshetra Auditorium, Vijayanagar 4th Stage [Mob: 94498-19536].

Dr. Shakira Jabeen is an Alumnus of Department of English, Manasagangothri, Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad and Kuvempu University, Shivamogga. She was a teacher fellow on FDP of UGC at Department of Political Science, Kuvempu Varsity. 

She was Associate Professor and Head, Department of English, Nehru Memorial College, Sullia, affiliated to Mangalore University. She has published research papers in peer reviewed journals. She is a Subject Specialist in Sociolinguistics at Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru and HRDC, Dharwad. Her areas of interest are Structural Linguistics, Socio-linguistics, Translation & ELT and Language Politics. An attempt is made to trace the formation of Kannada Linguistic State as a unique exercise. The difference between Unification of Kannada speech areas and formation of Tamil and Telugu Linguistic States is traced. The narratives coined for Ekeekarana are seen in the light of multiple languages coming under the umbrella of Kannada. Linguistic hegemony is seen within the framework of the Constitution.
