Mysuru: A technical talk on ‘Mechanical aspects of Machine Tool Testing’ was delivered by Prakash Narayan Kulkarni, retired Scientist-E and Head of Test Department, Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bengaluru, at National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru, recently under the aegis of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The session was about mechanical aspects of machine tool and testing. A brief introduction of various stages in tool development, Design, Prototype building and testing, Design modification, Retesting, Field trial, and Release of design was delivered. He briefed about the basic requirements of machine tool accuracy, productivity, safety, and functional reliability.

He illustrated the major steps including mounting the machine on proper foundation, removing the rust, maintaining environment conditions, lubricating.

Kulkarni also briefed about various test parameters such as verification of technical specifications (IS:6893), Accu-racy testing, Spindle idle power, Vibration analysis, Noise, Operating elements (IS:2987), Safety and interlock aspects (IS:11016), etc.

About 60 UG students from second and third year of Mechanical Engineering Dept. attended the technical talk, and explored various machine tool testing parameters, field trials, performance, accuracy, reliability etc., in production industries to improve the efficiency and performance of machine tools.

M.G. Anandakumar, indus-trialist, was also present.

The event was coordinated by Assistant Professors Naveen Krishna,  M. Rakesh, Gouthamraj and Chidanandamurthy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE, Mysuru.
