Kannur: Along with Cauvery Sankramana festival in Kodagu, Sankramana is also celebrated at Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya Temple in Kerala. It is located around 16 kms South of Kannur on the Kannur-Koothuparamba Road.
The presiding deity of Peralassery Temple is the serpent form of Lord Subrahmanya and inside the temple devotees can view many idols of snakes, mostly of king cobra. This majestic snake is considered to be holy and eggs are the main offering, known as ‘Mutta Oppikal’. It is popularly believed that this place of worship was built by Lord Rama himself.
The temple well or pond is the largest of its kind in Kerala. It has been so beautifully made that it is hard for a visitor to resist admiring its architecture. The steps leading to the well are numerous and they have been made in a geometrical star-shaped design. The step well resembles the many baoris (step wells) found in parts of North and West India.
As per the local belief, the water of Cauvery River mysteriously makes way to the step well on the Tula Sankramana day. Hence, Cauvery Sankramana is celebrated here too and devotees take a dip in the pond and offer oblations.
