Mysore/Mysuru: Traders of Devaraja Market have ruled out the possibility of spike in prices of onion following reports of damage to the crop due to floods.
G. Anand, onion trader at Devaraja Market, told SOM that since there is uninterrupted supply from local farmers, the question of increase in prices does not arise. At present, it is sold at Rs. 25 per kg for big size onion, Rs. 12-15 for medium and small size in the markets.
However, the same may be sold at Re.1 or Rs. 2 more by retail traders. The price of onion sold in push carts will be still less because of its quality.
He said large stock of onion from Maharashtra is coming to Mysuru APMC and it is likely to exhaust next month. After that, fresh stock from Hubballi and Chikkamagalur is expected to arrive in the next couple of months.
Fakruddhin Ali, another trader, said that the price of big size onion is Rs. 25 per kg and the sambar onion is sold at Rs. 60 per kg. Hence, there will be no increase in prices.
The price of onion had shot up by Rs. 8 to 10 per kg recently on account of Gowri-Ganesha festival. Another reason for this hike had been occurrence of rains before the festival. Now, large stock of onion was being dispatched to Kerala for Onam festival and naturally, there will be variation of price. However, it will stabilise thereafter, opine traders.
