Mysore/Mysuru: It seems that transgenders have shown little interest in voting, going by the numbers they have voted in the LS polls from Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha constituency held on Friday.
There were 184 trangender voters who have been classified as ‘others’ category in Mysuru-Kodagu LS seat. Also these voters were issued voter ID cards. But despite the regular campaign by SVEEP (Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation) Committee in the run up to the polls, only 39 of the 184 transgender voters exercised their franchise, while 145 abstained from voting.
Although 9 from others category in Madikeri Assembly segment and 7 in Virajpet Assembly segment had found place in the electoral rolls, none voted in the polls held on Friday. Also, only 2 out of 4 voted in Periyapatna, 8 out of 16 in Hunsur, 7 out of 34 in Chamundeshwari, 4 out of 28 in K.R. 5 out of 32 in Chamaraja and only 13 out of the 54 in N.R. Assembly segment voted.
This figure is very disappointing considering that the SVEEP Committee did its best to ensure a high voter turnout in Mysuru-Kodagu LS seat.
However, the voting percentage in others category is higher than what was recorded in the 2019 LS polls, when only 19 of the 153 voters had exercised their franchise.
