Mysuru: The presence of mind of a loco pilot prevented a possible tragedy yesterday, as he applied brakes in the nick of the moment, after spotting a tree fallen on the railway tracks.
The incident occurred near Kengal in Channapatna taluk of Ramanagaram district.
The Chamundi Express train left Bengaluru Railway Station at 6.15 pm towards Mysuru. Due to heavy rain, a tree had fallen on an electric pole and then on the track just 10 kms from Channapatna near Kengeri.
The Loco Pilot on seeing the tree on the tracks, applied sudden brakes, but the train after moving for about 500 metres over the branches came to a halt. Due to the impact of the tree, the headlight and the engine was damaged.
This resulted in the disruption of the train traffic for almost two hours. The Railway staff on hearing about the incident rushed to the spot and cleared the tree from the track. The train then left at 9.45 pm and as there was no headlight, it reached Channapatna at 10 pm.
The Railway authorities requested the passengers to board another train.
A passenger train which arrived at 10.30 pm left for Mysuru with the stranded passengers and the train reached Mysuru late in the night.
