Two groups protest over unveiling of Ambedkar’s statue at Town Hall

Mayor B. Bhagyavathi and other Corporators staging a protest last evening.

Mysuru:  With Town Hall premises getting ready for the unveiling ceremony of Ambedkar’s statue today, two groups staged separate protests at the premises last night each contradicting the other’s stand.

A group of Corporators led by Mayor Bhagyavathi staged a stir opposing the unveiling of the statue in a hurry.

Bhagyavathi took a strong objection to PWD officials in    hurriedly organising the unveiling ceremony without bringing to the notice of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor or MCC Commissioner which was against the accepted rules.

Former Mayor Purushotam recalled that CM Siddharamaiah had informed that all the Corporators would be invited for the unveiling function. He objected to the plan of organising the function in a hurried manner without informing anyone.

Former Mayor M.J. Ravikumar was present.

DSS condemns

Members of Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) staged a counter protest opposing the stand of the Mayor-led group. They recalled that the unveiling ceremony had been already postponed four or five times.

They contended that the function was organised in a hurry as poll dates could be announced any moment implementing the code of conduct. They also said that the MCC officials and Corporators have been informed on phone. They hence appealed the Mayor-led group not to object the proposed function.
