Two Professors spar over position of Principal at Maharani’s Arts College

Mysuru: An ugly incident was reported from Maharani’s Women’s Arts College here yesterday where the In-charge Principal and the designated Principal sparred over the eligibility of each person, unmindful of the stature and dignity of the position.

The argument arose when the college In-charge Principal N. Nanjundaswamy reportedly refused to hand over charge to the new incumbent Dr. M. Channabasavegowda who has been transferred from Government Degree College at Siddarathanagar.

The State Government has issued an order stating that Dr. Channabasavegowda shall take over as Principal of Maharani’s Arts College with effect from Aug. 9. Accordingly, the Joint Director of Collegiate Education had cancelled the continuation of Nanjundaswamy, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics as In-charge Principal of the college.

However When Channebasavegowda came to the college to assume charge, he was in shock as Nanjundaswamy allegedly declined to hand over the charge. They began exchanging words and Channabasavegowda asked Nanjundaswamy vociferously to hand over charge first, but to no avail.

The high drama and stalemate continued with both Professors holding on to their stand which went on till 7 pm. A few Professors even welcomed Channabasavegowda by offering a bouquet. They suggested Nanjundaswamy to first hand over charge abiding by the Government order and then move the  Court to justify his claim. However the suggestions proved futile again. The upset faculty members expressed displeasure over the fight between the two Professors which would tarnish the image of the college.

Speaking to press persons, Nanjundaswamy opined that Channabasavegowda was junior to him in seniority and had been posted as Principal on OOD Which legally does not quality either for transfer or deputation. He contended that he was due for retirement next month and added that he had appealed the higher authorities to continue him in his position. On receiving information Lakshmipuram Police Sub-Inspector Nagalingu arrived on the spot and managed to defuse the volatile situation by advising the warring Professors to solve the issue with  higher-up.

Later, Nanajundaswamy locked his office and left the place ending the high drama for the day.
