Vaccination and age calculation

Sir,

This is with reference to the letter titled “Odd age problem 44-45years” in Star of Mysore dated May 12.

As a Senior Consultant Physician, I wish to clarify the grey area between completed and incomplete years of age.

According to chronological age, starting from first birthday completing one year of age goes on every 365 days. Earlier I was Medical Examiner for LIC of India way back in the year 1968 at Udupi and subsequently at Mangaluru in 1975. Also in Mysuru during 1990s.

LIC, being part of Central Government, laid guidelines for age as follows: If a person completes six months after birthday, one year must be added to his age. If it is less than six months, age remains at last birthday.

In the present case, his age should be 45 years and eligible for COVID first vaccination at the centre of SMS confirmation, depending on availability of first vaccination. These issues must be addressed to the trainee vaccinator before sending them to Vaccination Centre. Also Health Officials should know thoroughly these practical aspects. During pandemic, restrictions of movements is priority and people should not be asked to run from pillar to post.

However, no one should panic about vaccination and must get it when available. One should be aware of prevention externally by following safe distance, wearing mask and sanitisation. I wish all, Best of Luck and Good Health during this pandemic.
