‘Vainika Brahma’ title for Vid. Kannan Balakrishnan

Mysore/Mysuru: Sri Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha has organised a day-long programme to commemorate the 102nd birthday remembrance of Mysore V. Doreswamy Iyengar on Nov. 20. The endowment programme is sponsored by family and wellwishers.

The programme will be inaugurated at 10 am followed by a Veena Concert by Mysore S. Rajalakshmi, a renowned and accomplished veena player. She will be accompanied on mridanga by R. Adamya while R. Srinidhi will support on ghata.

From 11.30 am, Vidu. Vani Yadunandan, a seasoned artiste from Bengaluru will perform on veena with same accompanists.

At  6 pm, Vid. Kannan Balakrishnan will be honoured with the title ‘Vainika Brahma’ followed by his Veena Concert being accompanied by Dr. Nishanth Chandran on violin. Vid. B.S. Prashanth on mridanga and Vid. Sharath Kaushik on ghata.

Family members of Doreswamy Iyengar will grace the occasion.

Vid. Kannan Balakrishnan hails from a family of musicians with an artistic background. Grandson of noted music composer and lyricist Meenakshi Subramanyam and nephew of Dr. Padma Subramanyam, Kannan is known for his charming creativity and clarity in speed without loss of emotion. He is perhaps the only veena artiste to perform jugalbandis with santoor, sarod and sitar.

Kannana was the Founder-President of YACm in 1985. He was blessed to receive the ‘Yuva Kala Bharathi’ award from Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. Apart from this, Kannan is also a recipient of Music Academy’s Outstanding Concert Award in 2015, ‘Gandharva Kala Ratna’ and ‘Vainika Mudhra’ in 2015.

Since 2010, Kannan has been organising the 10-day Veena Mahotsavam at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB), Chennai. He has the reputation of completing more than four-and-a-half years of music performance. His albums include ‘Veena Tarangini’, ‘Veena Vaibhavam’ and  ‘Nada Sangamam.’
