PROFILE — J.T. Jayaraj Krishnan and Jayashri Krishnan are amongst the leading veena players in the Karnatak tradition. Based in Chennai, they have dedicated themselves towards preserving and propagating the “Gayaki” style of playing the Veena.
A-graded veena artistes of AIR Chennai, this couple has regaled audiences in India and abroad.
Jayaraj and Jayashri belong to the direct Shishya Parampara of Nadajyoti Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar, who is one of the Trinity of Karnatak Music.
Born and brought up in Kolkata, both started their intensive training in vocal and veena at a very tender age under the tutelage of Vainika Vidwan late A. Anantharama Iyer and his sister late A. Champakavalli who continued the Dikshitar Parampara, which they imbibed from their father Brahmasri Ananthakrishna Iyer, a direct disciple of Ambi Dikshitar, the great grand nephew of Muthuswamy Dikshitar.
They have received many awards and titles. They have started an organisation called “Veenavaadhini” with multifarious objectives — teaching keen students the art of veena playing; conducting chamber concerts to provide an accessible platform for musicians.
The latest feather in their cap is the launch of a one of its kind Mobile App called VeenaJJ, which is currently available at the Google Play Store and will showcase 1,000 compositions and 100 ragas played by them on the veena.
