Veena Gaana Navollasa at Ganabharathi on Feb. 13

Mysore/Mysuru: Ganabharathi, Mysuru, has organised ‘Veena Gaana Navollasa’ at Veene Seshanna Bhavan on Adichunchanagiri Road in Kuvempunagar on Feb. 13 at 6 pm.

This annual event, a veena concert in memory of Vid. M.J. Sreenivasa Iyengar (1924-2013), the legendary veena exponent from the city, is sponsored by the family members and disciples of Iyengar. Vid. MJS has been a leading vainika in the Mysore School of Veena playing during later part of the last century.

Vid. D. Srinivas, a top-grade artiste of Akashvani and a much sought-after performer, is presenting the concert this year.

He will be accompanied by Vid. H.L. Shivashankar Swamy on mridanga and Vid. Omkar Rao on ghata.

Profiles

Vid. Srinivas, born in a family of artistes in Hyderabad, had his initial training from his mother Vidu. D.L. Tulasi. He later had his training from Vid. N.S. Srinivasan, a disciple of Vid. T.R. Mahalingam. Srinivas has been a Graded artiste of Akashvani since 1989 and was elevated to ‘A-Top’ grade in 2012. He has performed in Akashvani National programmes and in ‘Radio Sangeeta Sammelanas.’

Srinivas has performed hundreds of concerts all over India and overseas. He has performed along with many famed musicians, including Vid. Balamurali Krishna and Dr. L. Subramanyam. A panelled artiste of ICCR, he has performed in Queen Elizebeth Hall in London and in the United Nations. He has presented many lecture-demonstrations and has composed music for many documentaries and ballets.

Vid. Shivashankar Swamy, an A-grade artiste of Akashvani, works as a staff artiste at Mysuru Station and has produced some remarkable programmes for the Station.

Vid. Omkar Rao has been a disciple of Vid. Chandrashekar and Vid. T.A.S. Mani in Bengaluru and has learnt ghata under Vidu. Sukanya Ramgopal. He has a stage experience exceeding two decades.
