Veteran Trade Union Leader Ananth Subbarao passes away

Bengaluru: Veteran Trade Union Leader H.V. Ananth Subbarao (85), a resident of Vijayanagar in Bengaluru  passed away yesterday.

The face of State Road Transport Employees Unions in Karnataka, Subbarao joined the Trade Union movement in 1960s. He was the longest serving General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress  (AITUC), of which he was the President until Jan. 2026.

He headed the KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation and was the face of the Transport workers struggles for decades, during which he was jailed on several occasions.

He is survived by two daughters Jyothi and Rekha.

His mortal remains were kept at the State CPI Office at Vyalikaval in Bengaluru for a few hours this morning, following which his body was donated to a Hospital, it is learnt.

‘Bengaluru Chalo’ postponed: Following the death of Ananth Subbarao, the Joint Action Committee of the Trade Unions of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations has postponed ‘Bengaluru Chalo’  rally at Freedom Park in Bengaluru, which was scheduled for today (Jan. 29). The protest was called for fulfilment of demands related to payment of wage arrears and revision of wages. The next date of the rally will be announced soon, sources said.
