Mysore/Mysuru: Surabhi Ganakala Mandira, Gokulam, will play host to two Veena concerts this weekend, as part of the birth centenary celebrations of Vid. M.J. Sreenivasa Iyengar (1924 – 2013), MJS, the legendary Veena exponent from the city.
Vidu. Y.G. Srilatha, a young and highly talented vainika from Bengaluru, will be presenting the concert on Oct. 7 (Saturday). She will be accompanied by Vid. Nikshit Puttur on mridanga and Vid. Vyasa Vittala on khanjira.
The concert on Oct.8 (Sunday) will be a Veena Duet by veteran artistes Vidu. Revathi Srinivasan and Dr. Shobhana Swaminathan from Chennai. Vid. G.S. Ramanujam on mridanga and Vid. S. Manjunath on ghata, will accompany them.
Both the concerts are scheduled to start at 6 pm and will be held in the mini auditorium of Surabhi, located at 1225, 10th Main, 3rd Stage, Gokulam. The concerts are open to all music lovers.
Artistes’ Profile: Academically an M.Tech. graduate, Vidu. Srilatha has been trained in Veena by leading exponents Vidu. Padmavati Ananthagopalan and Vidu. Suma Sudheendra. She has also learnt under Vid. Neela Ramgopal and performed in many leading sabhas.
Vidu. Revathi, a leading vainika in Chennai, has learnt under Chellam Rajagopal, Vid. V.L. Janakiraman, Vid. Gomathi Sankara Iyer and Vid. Tanjore Shankara Iyer. She had been under the tutelage of legendary K.S. Narayanaswami for some time. She has served All India Radio in Chennai for 24 years as a top grade artiste and has been performing in India and abroad.
Dr. Shobana, a disciple of Vidu. Revathi Srinivasan, is a graded performer of AIR. She has a Ph.D. in Music from Mother Teresa Women’s University. She is an Associate Professor at Vels University, Chennai and at Silicon Andhra University, California and a teaching faculty at Music Academy, Chennai.
All the four accompanying artistes are percussionists well-established in the field and popular in music circles in the State.
