Mysuru: Renowned violinist Vidwan S. Mahadevappa (87), a resident of Kuvempunagar, passed away at a private hospital in city this morning. He leaves behind his wife Kamalamma, sons Mysuru M. Nagaraj and Mysuru M. Manjunath (both renowned violinists), a host of relatives and friends.
Last rites were held at the Veerashaiva burial grounds in Lalithadripura today at 4 pm, according to family sources.
Born in Mudigundam near Mysuru, Vid. Mahadevappa had his formal training in vocal music and violin under the tutelage of Narayana Swamy of Kollegal. Later, he was accepted as a student by one of the great musicians of Karnataka T. Puttaswamiah, younger brother of legendary T. Chowdiah. He also served as the Head of the Department of Violin at University of Mysore Fine Arts College where he served as a Professor for almost 26 years.
Recognising his invaluable services in the field of music, the Government of Karnataka honoured him with the ‘State Sangeetha Vidwan’ Award. He was twice nominated as a Member of Karnataka State Sangeetha Nritya Academy. He has been an Honorary Chairperson for a number of reputed Government institutions. He also had the honour of chairing the prestigious JSS Music Conference in 2001.
