An excellent spell of left-arm spin bowling by Vishal Choudhary (six for 63) helped Uttar Pradesh to take the first day’s play honours against host Karnataka when they bowled them out for 228 in their first essay and in reply had scored 75 for three in 28 overs, at close of play in the four-day Col. C.K. Nayadu Trophy Plate (third place tie) U-23 match played at the SDNR Wadiyar Platinum Jubilee Grounds here on Sunday.
Winning the toss and batting first, Karnataka got off to a decent start when skipper D. Nischal (35, 6x4s) and Mysuru zone lad M.G. Naveen (31, 3x4s, 1x6s) added 56-runs for the opening wicket. Later the innings was steadied by K.N. Bharath (60, 8x4s) and Samarth Ooty (22, 2x4s) who added 68-runs for the fourth wicket. Shreyas Gopal (8) and J. Suchith (6) were dismissed cheaply. Left-arm spinner Vishal impressed for Uttar Pradesh by taking six for 63 (20.5-4-63-6). Medium-pacer Mohd. Javed (one for 62), Deepak Kumar (one for 44) and spinner Shivam Choudhary (one for 19) were the other wicket-takers.
In reply, Uttar Pradesh at close of play had scored 75 for three in 28 overs. Opener and skipper Shivam Choudhary (30, 6x4s) was the top scorer. Shubham Agarwal (13 n.o.) & Shubham Chaubey (7 n.o.) were at the crease at stumps. Mysuru lad and left-arm spinner J. Suchith took 2 for 15 for Karnataka.
