Mysore/Mysuru: Famed vocalist Vidu. Mangalam Shankar will be presenting a vocal concert at Sri Mysore Vasudevacharya’s house in city on Saturday (Apr. 29). She will be accompanied by Vid. Arunachal Kartic on violin and Vid. R.S.R. Srikanth on mridanga. The concert, scheduled to start at 10.30 am, is open to the public.
Vidu. Mangalam Shankar, daughter-in-law of Veena exponent Kalaimamaṇi Kalpagam Swaminathan, is a vocalist of great repute. Endowed with a voice of unusual power, emotions and timbre, she stands tall as the torch-bearer of the famed T.M. Thyagarajan (TMT) tradition. She began learning Karnatak music from her mother Valadi Janaki Annadhanam at a very early age and came under the direct tutelage of Sangita Kalanidhi T.M. Tyagarajan in 1974.
She also received training under Padma Vibhushan D.K. Pattammal and Sangita Kalanidhi D.K. Jayaraman. She has a degree from Tamiḻ Naḍu Government Music College, Chennai, with Gold Medals both in Vocal and Musicology. An A-Grade artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Vidu. Mangalam Shankar has been performing concerts under the auspices of major organisations, sabhas for over four decades worldwide. She has composed many kṛithis and songs for dance dramas, arangetrams & musical projects.
She has also contributed to the propagation of Karnatak music by conducting workshops across the globe. She has performed thematic concerts like exclusive Trinity compositions, Saint Purandaradasa’s compositions. She has many Music albums and Publications, including “Geetha Ganamrudham”, a selection of krithis composed by Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, to her credit.
