Volvo S60 Petrol to be Launched in India, Diesel Given a Miss

Volvo confirms the launch of the brand new S60 sedan for the Indian market. The new model is expected to be launched in the late months of 2019. Similar to the global release, the S60 sedan which is up for launch in India won’t be offered with a diesel engine.

The Volvo S60 sedan is the first-ever product from the Swedish automaker to not offer a diesel engine option. The move is an important part of the car maker’s strategy to slowly shift its focus toward the hybrid and pure-electric ride segments in the near future.

2019 Volvo S60 will mark the entry of the 3rd generation of the mid-size sedan. At present, the second-generation of the S60 is being sold in the Indian market. However, it is available only in a diesel variant.

The third-gen Volvo S60 mid-size sedan was first displayed at the Volvo’s manufacturing plant in Charleston, USA, in June 2018. Like the older sibling, Volvo S90 sedan, the S60 is built upon the Swedish carmaker’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform.

At the moment, the global market enjoys three variants of the S60 sedan, namely T5, T6, and the T8 plugin hybrid. All three variants of the Volvo S60 mid-size sedan draw power from the same 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol engine. However, they are offered with different states of tune.

While the T5 is able to enjoy 250 hp of power along with 350 Nm of torque with its turbo engine, the T6 variant comes with a turbocharged and supercharged engine. It is capable of generating 316 hp of power and 400 Nm of torque.

The high-end make of the S60 sedan, T8 supports the same engine as that of the T6. Nonetheless, it comes with an additional 65kW electric motor paired with a 10.4 kWh battery.

This gives the T8 a boost, taking its maximum power generation and maximum torque output to 400 hp and 640 Nm, respectively.

All three variants of the Volvo S60 sedan come with an 8-speed automatic, for gear-shifting.

While the T5 make of the S60 mid-size sedan flaunts a front-wheel-drive layout, the T6, and T8 variants come with an all-wheel-drive configuration.

Being one of the hottest rides from the Swedish carmaker, the S60 sedan comes with a galore of features and standard equipment. The third-generation of the Volvo S60 sedan looks outstanding on the outside. This is partly due to its inheritance of several features from the bigger S90 sedan.

For infotainment, the Volvo S60 mid-size sedan supports the proprietary Sensus Connect Infotainment System. It flaunts a tablet-style touchscreen interface. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrations are available with the system to make the experience even better.

There are a number of safety features available to the Volvo S60 sedan, most notable among which are the Auto-Brake Technology, Cross-Traffic Alert, and the Pilot Assist System.

Speculations are ripe about Volvo to launch T5 and T6 variants of the S60 mid-size sedan in the Indian auto market by the late of 2019. In the Indian car market, Volvo S60 will face-off against to the likes of Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Jaguar XE, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Following the recent hoo-ha about EVs and the migration of global automakers towards the Indian car market, Volvo is prompt to bring new models to India following their global launch.

However, the scheduled arrival of the S60 sedan seems to be somewhat later than anticipated.

The Swedish carmaker has already publicized its plans of assembling PHEVs in the country. Moreover, it has announced to launch 4 PHEVs in the India car market in the 3 upcoming years.

As such, it’ll be no surprise if the Indian market witnesses the launch of the plug-in hybrid T8 as well. However, it is highly unlikely for the electric-gas hybrid to go on sale anytime in 2019.
