Mysore/Mysuru: JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru, had organised a webinar on “Alternative Careers in Life Sciences” on Wednesday. The talk was be delivered by Dr. Apurva Barve, Coordinator, Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CoESME), Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Pune.
The webinar primarily aimed at familiarising and motivating students to aspire for a plethora of career opportunities in Life Sciences. A total of 250 participants comprising students and aspirants of BSc, MSc, Ph.D. in Life Sciences participated in the event.
The talk focused on alternatives to traditional choice of career in Life Sciences by providing details on newer job avenues and roles like Technical Officer at Core / Common Instrumentation Facilities, Science and Grant Administration, Science Policy, Patent Law / IPR, Biotech. Entrepreneurship / start-ups, Medical or Technical Writing, Editing, Publishing, Science Journalism, Science Communication and Outreach.
Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Dean-Faculty of Life Sciences & Director-Research, inaugurated the event and spoke about integrating science and mathematics knowledge for better employability.
Dr. K.A. Raveesha, Head, School of Life Sciences while introducing the context of the webinar explained the importance of “Being Informed” about the career options and requirements for building great career with strong academic and research background.
In his presidential address, Dr. P.A. Kushalappa, Director-Academics, spoke on the necessity of introspective measures to be taken by students to make successful career out of their academic/research qualifications empowered with their skill sets.
The webinar was con-ceptualised (alongside Dr. Apurva Barve), organised and moderated by Dr. Raghu Ram Achar, Assistant Professor, Division of Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences. Dr. J.R. Kumar and Dr. J.M. Siddesha, Assistant Professors, were also present.
