Siddapura: An estate worker was killed and another person sustained injuries in a wild elephant attack at Mekoor Village near Pollibetta last Wednesday.
The victim has been identified as K. Sudhakar, an estate supervisor at Bajegolli Kamadhenu Estate in Pollibetta. T.H. Mohammad of Badaga Banangala village has sustained injuries.
On Wednesday noon, Sudhakar and Mohammed were heading on a bike towards their home from the estate to have lunch when a wild elephant suddenly attacked them. Sudhakar was thrown away at a distance by the wild elephant and Mohammad ran for his life. In a fit of rage, the elephant trampled the bike.
Other estate labourers, who witnessed the incident, tried to shoo away the elephant. The victims were shifted to Siddapura Primary Health Centre and were given first aid treatment. Sudhakar, who had sustained grievous injuries, was later shifted to Madikeri District Hospital and was moved to a hospital in Mangaluru where he succumbed to injuries on Thursday morning.
Mohammad has sustained a fracture in his leg. The villagers blamed the Forest Department for Sudhakar’s death and demanded that a solatium of Rs. 2 lakh must be immediately paid. They alleged that despite many wild elephant attacks in the surroundings of Pollibetta, Siddapura, Maldare and Mekoor, nothing much has been done by the Department.
