Mysore/Mysuru: A woman has lodged a complaint with Kuvempunagar Police over the disappearance of gold coins worth several lakhs of rupees from her bank locker.
Rukmini, a resident of Lingambudipalya, stated that she had kept one kilogram of gold coins in her locker at the Bank of Baroda’s Kuvempunagar Branch, only to find the quantity reduced to nearly half. Following her complaint, the Kuvempunagar Police have registered an FIR against the branch manager and staff.
According to her statement, Rukmini had initially stored gold ornaments and coins in a locker at the Bank of Baroda in Coimbatore, later transferring them to the bank’s Kuvempunagar Branch on Panchamantra Road. She claimed that the bank manager had made an agreement assuring the safe custody of the gold coins and on April 10, 2023, she stored approximately 1 kg of gold coins in the locker.
However, during an inspection on Dec. 18, 2024, she noticed a significant reduction in the quantity. When she questioned the bank staff, they allegedly failed to provide a clear explanation. On March 3, 2025, when she weighed the coins, they measured 550.905 grams and by May 9, they had further reduced to 492.988 grams.
In her complaint, Rukmini also alleged that her photograph in the bank’s register had been replaced, a seal had been affixed over it and no information had been given regarding the missing 500 grams of gold coins to date. Kuvempunagar Police have launched an investigation.
