In a gory incident, a 24-year-old newly-married woman was burnt to death by her husband and in-laws at Biligere in the taluk yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Rathnamma (24).
Rathnamma of Banur village in Mysuru taluk got married to one Ravi, 29, of Biligere just three months ago. But days after her marriage, Rathnamma’s husband and her in-laws started harassing for dowry. As Rathnamma could not bring more dowry, her husband Ravi and his parents Thayamma and Basavegowda set her ablaze after dousing with kerosene. Rathnamma, who sustained serious burn injuries, died even before being shifted to the hospital, it is learnt. Soon after Rathnamma’s death, her husband Ravi and her parents-in-law fled the village.
Rathnamma is said to be the second wife of Ravi, after his first wife Sowmya had deserted him, unable to bear dowry harassment.
Following a complaint by Rathnamma’s father Sannamadegowda, the Biligere Police, who have registered a case, are investigating. Tahsildar Dayanand, ASP Mohammad Sujitha, CPI Shivamurthy & SI Satish visited the spot.
